Tallaght Athletes Perform Well in Recent Events

Tallaght athletes performed very well in track, road and cross country events at Local Regional and National in recent weeks.

Last weekend at AAI Indoor Games which were held in the new National Indoor Facility in Abbotstown Eoin Doherty clocked 6.99 when finishing 2nd in the AAI Senior 60m final while Fionn Carroll, Simon Essuman and Sean Flanagan recorded times of 22.81, 22.85, 23.80 respectively in the 200m heat. Joseph Lyons also had a good outing in his first race of the season when finishing 4th overall in the 800m with a time of 1.56.80.

A week earlier at the National Indoor Junior & U23 Championships at the AIT International Arena in Athlone Eoin Doherty put in some fine rounds of sprinting before nailing the Silver medal in the U23 60m final where he recorded 6.94 seconds in the 60m final and on the same day Fionn Carroll recorded an excellent time of 49.84 to take the Bronze medal in the Junior 400m with club colleague Simon Essuman finishing 4th with a good time of 50.14. Fionn recorded 50.52 the previous day when finishing third in an open invitational contest at the same venue and a few weeks earlier recorded 2.0.12 when winning an open race on the same track.

In between, Saoirse Reihill notched up a score of 2131 points to take Bronze in the National Junior Combined Events Championships in Athlone in Mid January while Dean Conway in his first indoor outing of the season recorded 2.05.06 when finishing 7th in the 800m in Athlone at the end of January.

Dean  qualified for the Leinster Schools cross Country Championships a few days earlier with a good run when finishing 6th in the West Leinster Senior race in the Phoenix Park where Sadiq Nasir and Eoghan Keaney also qualified in the same contest, and in the Inter 2400m girls event Jennifer Mc Adams won bronze and also qualified for the Leinster Championships and she had a very good outing a few weeks earlier in the DCU Cross Country Invitational Meet where she finished a very good 4th over 3000m.

Elsewhere, Tallaght had a large number of runners in the Annual Raheny 5 mile Road race where Laura Mc Donnell who was 10th of the 1557 women who finished led home the Tallaght ladies with a good time in 30.24 while Peter Fitzsimons led the men home when he crossed the line in 47th (27.20) of the 1749 men who finished the race with Luke Coleman next to finish with a time of 27.36 followed by David O'Callaghan 28.57, Niall Coppinger 29.34, Liam Cullen 29.36, Shane Carton 29.48, Dermot Delaney 29.46, Laura McDonnell 30.24, David O'Brien 30.25, David Callaghan 30.48, Frank Johnston 30.28, Gerry Dore 31.30, Derek Quinn 31.57, Andrew Lennon 32.09, Gerry Schley 32.34, Dave Meehan 32.34, Declan Poynton 33.59 John Stokes 34.32, Paul Murphy 35.13, Joe Pepper 35.06, Sean McDonnell 35.52, Gareth O Keeffe 35.07, Gwen Baker 36.14, James Kennedy 36.15, Maria Kavanagh 36.38, Paula Murray 36.28, Rob Harris 36.55.  

Garry Clarke was next to finish and his time of 36.49 was enough to secure 3rd in the O/65 category and he was then followed across the line by by Sarah Kinsella 37.11, Suzanne Carter 36.15, Alan McCabe 37.48, Claire O'Brien 38.30, Jenny O'Connor 37.59, Martina Farrell 38.48, Karl O'Toole 38.32 and Suzanne O'Callaghan 38.44.

Eddie Coyle’s time of  40.00 secured second prize in the O/70 category and he was followed home by  Terry Fayne 40.10, Susie Sweeny 41.18, Lesley Evans 41.33, Hazel Keane 41.42, Tracey Powell 42.33, Sandra Warburton 44.02, Chris Dalton 44.02, Deborah O'Connor 44.06, Brian O'Connor 43.21, Naoimh Maloney Mahon 44.48, Ciara Forrester 43.43, Regina Moody 45.38, Grainne Coogan 45.38, Carmel Smith 47.15, Marie Leonard 49.19, Carol Coleman 50.30, Breda Woods 49.31, Claire O'Toole 49.31, Brian Edwards 49.34, Grainne Byrne 49.47 and Corrine Quinn 1.00.05.

Next up for Tallaght athletes is the Dublin Juvenile Indoor Championships which take place in Abbotstown on Friday/Saturday and Sunday next where many are expected to put on a bold show in track and field events and the following weekend where some will be vying for podium positions in the National Senior Indoor Championships at the same venue.
